Hemp farming can work as long as state agriculture and law enforcement officials collaborate to regulate it, South Dakota lawmakers heard on Thursday.
Echoing Bevan's comments, Jonathan Miller, general counsel for the U.S. Hemp Roundtable, said their coalition is developing industry standards and best practices to ensure that products are safe for consumers. Industry self-regulation doesn't replace government regulations, but they need to hold themselves to high standards, Miller said. "Our biggest enemy is not the FDA, it's not state legislators. Our biggest enemy is companies that sell CBD products that are false, that don't have CBD in them or have high levels of toxins in them or use medical claims that are inappropriate," Miller said.
